My Story

Ozzie (L), Levi (R) and me in the Santa Cruz Mountains

Greetings, and thank you for your interest in exploring death and dying.

My name is Monica Montefiore, I'm a certified End-of-Life Guide and founder of The Mountainflower Path.

I took a meandering path to this work. For over two decades, I led a successful career in corporate real estate. At some point, I realized my work was no longer aligned with who I had become. I had evolved personally, but my career had not evolved with me. I made the decision to leave, and give myself time and space to contemplate what was next.

I spent months in deep reflection, embarking on a healing journey of self-discovery to find what truly mattered to me. It was a challenging process of unlearning, letting go of societal "shoulds," and embracing the gentle guidance of my curiosity and intuition.

During this time, I was also facing the difficult reality of my aging parents. The thought of a world without them left me paralyzed. And while the idea of broaching the topic of death with them felt like a betrayal of trust, I was acutely aware of how much I would regret not knowing what my parents wanted for themselves, and not being there for them when they needed me most, especially living so far away. I was determined to find a way to support them during their golden years, despite the distance.

In a moment of clarity, I was struck by the wisdom of Marcus Aurelius: "What stands in the way becomes the way." I realized that to overcome my fear of death, I needed to turn towards it. The more I educated myself, the more empowered I felt. Learning what dying looks like in the months, weeks and days before death brought clarity. Taking measures now to ensure my wishes will be honored at the end of my life brought a feeling of relief. I felt truly alive for the first time in a while -- I realized this was my calling. I am passionate about helping others face their fears and gain control over the controllable aspects of the final phase of life, for them and their loved ones.

The name "The Mountainflower Path," is inspired by my Italian heritage. It is the English translation of my family name and it encapsulates the essence of who I am and my approach to this work—a harmonious blend of the mountain's quiet strength and the flower's gentle grace.

I am committed to being a gentle and compassionate guide, dedicated to supporting you and your loved ones on this sacred journey.
